Phoenix of Chaos

He opened his eyes groggily.
"Where..." he groaned. "Where am I?"
"You are at the portal dividing your world and a world occupied solely by pokémon." a strange voice replied. It would have made him jump, but whatever had knocked him out was still lingering in his body.
"Pokémon? You mean those creatures from the games?"
"Indeed."
"Why? Why am I here?"
"You'll see. I'd usually ask you some questions, but in this case-"
"What do you mean, 'usually'?"
"... But in this case, I'll ask just one."
"Go on, then." He tried to sit up, but came crashing back down.
"If you had the choice, which pokémon would you be?" he tried to think, but his mind kept slipping. Eventually, it settled on a brown pokémon with four legs...
"An Eevee. I'd rather be an Eevee."
"So be it. The transformation shouldn't hurt-"
"Shouldn't?"
"... No, it shouldn't. Brace yourself!" As soon as the last echo died away, pain scorched through his body like a white hot ember, to be replaced by a roaring river of noise, to be replaced by spasms like he'd been shocked, which in turn were replaced by... you get the picture. Finally, all was silent, save for a few birds. Eventually, something - a dog? - came up to him and nudged him. He groaned, and a voice said,
"So it lives. Awaken, little one, if you can." Little one? What nonsense was this guy blabbering on about? Nonetheless, he opened one eye - and almost shut it again. Staring back was the eye of a Vaporeon, or something very similar.

Chapter 1: Humble Beginnings & A Very Small Forest

He may not have shut his eye again, but he did manage to shut his mouth in time to silence a scream.
"What troubles you, little one?" the Vaporeon asked.
"The fact you keep calling me 'Little One', for a start."
"But by what else am I to call you?" he was about to reply, when he realised... he didn't know. Any memory of being a human was fading fast, and soon... there were none. His silence answered Vaporeon's question.
"Very well. If you want a name, it shall be Eevee, for that is what you are." A strand of memory struggled in Eevee's mind, but it soon faded. He got to his feet and followed Vaporeon, absent-mindedly watching Vaporeon's swishing tail. Something quickly distracted him, though, and that thing was a panicked Butterfree. Vaporeon was already trying to calm her down, so Eevee could only catch certain words. What he could get of the conversation was
"... baby... there... what to do..."
"Don't... we'll... won't we, Eevee?" he quickly realised this last part was directed at him, and he swiftly nodded. "See?" Vaporeon said, turning back to face Butterfree. "He'll be back before you know it." Butterfree sniffed, and flew slowly away.
"Come on, then! We've a Caterpie to rescue!"
"Say what?"
"I suppose we were talking rather quickly... Very well, I'll explain it. Butterfree's son, Caterpie, has fallen down a fissure in the Tiny Woods. We've agreed to go down there and get him back."
"How far down is he?"
"Not very, thankfully."
"Why thankfully?"
"Well... this is both yours and my first mission. Let's do it right!"
"Yeah!" Eevee replied, not at all assured. Still, he had agreed to it, so he set off.

The woods themselves weren't that far away, but the recent fissure that had trapped poor Caterpie angered the pokémon within.
"Be careful," muttered Vaporeon. "Who knows who's in this forest."
"Probably just a couple of Pidgeys, nothing more." Eevee replied.
"Still, caution is advised. Have your tail at the ready."
"My tail? What am I supposed to do with that?"
"You mean...? Never mind. Your instincts will tell you when the time is nigh."
"Right..." At that moment, a Wurmple appeared in front of Vaporeon. Without another word, he slammed into it.
"What was that for?" the Wurmple asked, surprisingly angry for a caterpillar.
"Uh... I thought..."
"Yeah, well think on this!" it replied, and threw itself into him. Thankfully, the Wurmple wasn't a strong attacker, but it was very defensive.
"Now, Eevee!" without thinking, his tail lashed from side to side. The Wurmple stared at it, and muttered
"That's cute."
"Cute? CUTE?! Do you think this is cute?!" and he slammed into it much harder than Vaporeon had. It went down without another word.
"What was that?" he asked Vaporeon.
"That was Tackle. I wonder why I didn't think of that... but what's done is done. Let's move on!" and it leapt away. Eevee jumped after him, and was surprised at the speed he could summon.

Eventually, after fighting off a couple more pokémon, Eevee felt a surge of strength pass through him, filling him and making him jump. Vaporeon turned, and nodded.
"What..." Eevee asked. "What was that?"
"You just levelled."
"Levelled?" Again, something stirred in his memory, but again it was weak and soon disappeared.
"Your power grows slightly with each pokémon defeated. When you defeat enough enemies, the power blooms."
"With all this talk of growing and blooming, you'd think you were a Leafeon." Eevee joked; not realising there was a Leafeon behind him. Vaporeon said nothing. Eventually, Eevee noticed that Vaporeon was looking past him, turned, and saw Leafeon.
“Ah.” The Leafeon extended a vine from its back, and this slammed into Eevee. Naturally, Eevee cried in pain, and Vaporeon leapt into action. The Leafeon, still enraged, turned its whip onto Vaporeon – when it looked into his eyes. The vine stopped suddenly, less than an inch from his face. This quickly receded into who knew where, and the Leafeon seemed… almost shy. Vaporeon turned to help Eevee up. Thankfully, he was recovering.
“Forgive me,” the Leafeon said, her voice revealing her gender. “I… My anger…”
“Don’t worry. That’s happened to every pokémon here.” The Leafeon smiled, but something still troubled her. An idea struck her and she looked into Vaporeon’s eyes.
“You’re in a rescue team, right?”
“What of it?”
“Can I join?”

“Naturally!” Vaporeon said, leaving Eevee at a loss for words. “Any help is appreciated!”
“That’s good to hear.” She said, flashing a smile that silenced both of them and walked down a corridor. Eevee was the first to recover, and bolted after her. He rounded the corner, just in time to see her knock out a Wurmple with another vine. She hummed a note, and the vine receded.
“Where do they come from?” he asked innocently. Leafeon stared, but realised Eevee’s mistake and laughed.
“It’s better you don’t ask.” She replied, walking on. Eevee simply stood there, confused, when Vaporeon said
“You don’t ask a pokémon where he, she or it got their powers.”
“Why not?” Eevee asked, bounding after Leafeon but looking at Vaporeon.
“You just don’t. It’s a taboo subject.”
“Oh.” His question answered, he looked ahead, just in time to prevent himself tumbling down a flight of stairs. Vaporeon looked down them, perplexed.
“Why are there stairs in a forest?” he asked.
“All the better for reaching Caterpie!” Leafeon replied from the foot of the stairs. “Now are you coming or not?”
