Boltz . . . yeah.

So, I've been wondering. Does the story of why Boltz is afraid all the time make sense, or am I just kidding myself?

I condensed it a little more than planned, so I'm afraid I left something important out. I guess I'll wait to hear what you guys say before I explain anything . . .

I think it really made sense - even beyond just making sense, it explains why he acts the way he does, and it's something about his character that we have to keep in mind.
Something I was saying to a friend last night while discussing an anime (Saiyuki! Very Happy) seems to fit in here. We were talking about how emo everyone's pasts are in a lot of series, like Naruto, and how depressing some scenes from Saiyuki were and how even after seeing the same flashback several times we were still really upset and still had so much "sympathy pain"....
The way a deep scar in a character effects us is really something about our own selves made prominent and brought to light. Boltz's fear didn't seem to be of a cruel trainer; it looked and sounded to me like he was more afraid of being 'unworthy' or 'not strong enough'. He's plagued by self-doubt, and that's his greatest fear and pain.
I think everyone has the same feeling, even when it's irrational. Most people are affected by sarcasm or hateful remarks, put-downs and let-downs, no matter how they hide it. As a social people and species, it's very hurtful to be told you aren't worth it or aren't good enough. Because we can share that with him, we can understand who he is more. The only reason we don't recognize it as being part of our own character is because it's much more obvious and prominent in his experience and his attitude.
You are craftsman! Good job! (:

---Anyway, boil that all down into a simple "Yes". (: His story made sense. He was abused and put down and now he's afraid to try because he fears if he isn't good enough, Hilaree might hurt him - but even worse than that, he fears her disapproval. No matter how irrational and silly-seeming that is. Wink

Good, yes! That's exactly right!

Especially the part of being not good enough or whatever. I was really afraid that part didn't get across. It kind of got cut, but will be said later on that Boltz is very afraid of messing up. That is essentially why he wouldn't/couldn't fight the Pidgey. He was afraid he'd mess it up.

And afraid of getting hurt too, I guess.

So at least one person undestood it. Good deal.

Heh, emo . . . It's true! Everyone has pains in their pasts. It's just is talked about more in anime and manga than in real life.
