First Impressions

Since no-one else has created another board in here (We're all pretty much veterans by now anyway) I decided to go ahead with another of my ideas.

L'interrogat (Pardon my French.)

- How did you come across Just Gotta?

- What was your first impression?

- Why have you continued to read it?

----------------------

How did you come across Just Gotta?

I was searching for Pokémon comics and trying to find any non-sprite ones that exist. I used to read sprite comics, but now I really don't have the time to go through a brazilian extra a day, and I just don't enjoy it as much. The only sprite comic I read as religiously as I read Just Gotta is Bob & George, and it should be obvious why.
Other than that, I thought it felt... familiar. It's the story we all want to live, the story of someone who loves Pokémon having the chance to actually train them. And I haven't seen many comics on this - just fanfictions, and that is a different universe entirely. It's also the age-old (or 10-year-old if you're technical) tale of the young Trainer. The art style strongly reminds me of when I used to copy out of my Pokémon Handbook (The limited edition Togepi one, with the sparkly green cover - I still have all of my handbooks), because it just so strongly mirrors the style of the actual anime and somewhat the Pokémon Adventure manga.

What was your first impression?

"The first page doesn't look that great".

That's a laugh, considering how huge a fan I am now. But I can honestly say, I thought it looked dumb at the time and now I kick myself (Much as we all do when we discover that we actually /do/ like One Piece enough to cheer at the recent Funimation news, although we've always complained that Obata's art is so much better) because the comic was fairly new at the time and because I thought it was too cliché.

Why have you continued to read it?

0_0 This is like asking me why I like Chrono Crusade. I think Vye is a wonderful artist, storyteller, and friend. I think the story smacks of reminiscence, and I know that isn't spelled properly. I think that I can relate to Hilaree and Spyro as much as I can relate to any other manga or novel character, and I think that it's great so far and can only continue to get better. It's definitely a great story and it has humor for people who enjoy the 'chibi element'. All in all, I'm glad to have (tried) to stick by it and I can't wait to see Just gotta develop even more!

Ow, that's long. Do you guys have any essays to share? XD
Georgia

- How did you come across Just Gotta?
Um...my brother, he read it first. :3

- What was your first impression?
I thought it was cool, and I liked the art alot.

- Why have you continued to read it?
Because I like drawn comics! I also like Pokemon comics, so combine them together makes a comic I adore! ^^;

Sorry I made short comments. xD I dunno what else to say.
Vye Brante

Tee hee!

I seriously don't know if I should contribute to this conversation . . . seeing as how I don't think I had any real first impressions of the story because I wrote it. But uh . . . this is interesting to know. It's fun to read!

Mwahahaha! So even Amjam didn't like Just Gotta at first! It's kinda funny 'cause I thought the same thing about the first page. I think I actually was a little harsher than that but I'm allowed.

I have a quick guestion, Neogeorgia. Is NeoJames155 your brother? I mean, I know you both have the Neo and the 155 and stuff. I just had wondering what the connection between you was and then you started talking about your brother.
Georgia

Uh, yeah. He's my brother...*stares at NeoJames* atleast, I think he's my brother.
Just kidding, he is.
Vye Brante

Okay! I'm a little more knowledgable now!

No you're not. XP That's what you've got me for, preventing you from sinking into lower self-esteem.
Georgia

Your quote didn't work, so I fixed it. <3 Hope you didn't mind..
iWish

I thought it was cool. and I wanted to be the first ever cameo! SPLEE!!!
Vye Brante

Hee hee, well, you go what you wanted then!
iWish

yup. me lucky is happy yes and.

- How did you come across Just Gotta?

It was on the Smack Jeeves's update page, so I read it and faved it.

- What was your first impression?

"...Wow,this is interesting. Why am I reading it?" Sorry Vye! I wasn't too interested until I saw it wasn't badge catching!

- Why have you continued to read it?

...Good question. Because I love the Author? She isn't all stuck up because people read her comic. That, and I Love Just Gotta!
Ghost

How did you come across Just Gotta?
Saw it at Serebii when I was looking at comics to get an idea of what I wanted to do for mine (which I haven't drawn at all.. yet.. so...)

- What was your first impression?
Lessee.. Well, just reading Vye's comments at first gave a friendly atmosphere. Other than that, I can't really remember too much, this was quite some time ago. I do know that, as I came later around page 100, I could see that there was some improvement as it went along, which is great...

- Why have you continued to read it?
For one, because I would like to see how much more Vye will get to improve (though I think she's already doing great!) and for two, well... I want to see where the story goes.
Oranges_and_Pears

- How did you come across Just Gotta?- Serebii forums. I was browsing, and, always liking comics as a kid, I said, "Oo, comics!" and clicked on it. Most of the threads had stupid names and stuff, but when I saw "Just Gotta", I "just hadta" click on it.

- What was your first impression?-That it was the best thing ever. I loved it so much that I made my brother read it. Lol.

- Why have you continued to read it?-Duh? Cuz it's frickin awsome ^^
Tyto

How did you first come across Just Gotta?

Comic-Era, I'm pretty sure... I can't really remember xD

First impressions?

... I'm ashamed to admit it, but I stopped reading at first because I didn't like the art.  I didn't even get far enough into the comic to pick up the story.  And then, when I DID get past the first five pages or so, I started kicking myself, because I was enjoying it so much and had been inches away from missing out.  It taught me a good lesson... xD

Why do I keep reading it?

Because it's made of 100% win.  And because I will lose sleep over it if I never find out how it ends xD
klinkhauer

How long have I been here now? Am I too late to answer these? XD

How did you come across Just Gotta?
It was the Featured Donator Comic during my first visit to SmackJeeves (or it was recently updated... its banner was on the front page... XD), and I wanted a few examples of what comics they accepted before settling there. Comicgenesis was baaad. x.x I planned on just reading the first couple of pages and just kept clicking... XD

What was your first impression?
"I draw better than this. I should be okay." Pffft. I'm sorry, but that was the first thought in my head when I was reading the first chapter. ^^;; But I came to discover that my motivation and story-telling skills lagged seriously behind Vye's, even though we have the same springboard. Real world kids launched into the Pokémon world with no explanation.

Why have you continued to read it?
Because it's awesome! And Vye has been a huge support in getting ATTO off the ground, with comments on most of the pages. :3 I wuv you! <3
Vye Brante

Awww . . . reading this makes me happy.

I think it's funny how everyone pretty much had the same first impression: The art sucks!  Hee hee, I agree.  And then it seems the story makes up for it.  Huh.  I didn't think I was doing a good enough job with the story either.  So cool!

Thanks for this thread and thanks for all the support!  I love all of you guys too!  (And that of course includes you klinkhauer!)
klinkhauer

Very Happy Warm fuzzies all around! Woo!

I kinda wish that I had thoguht before Making my Author Name on Smack Jeeves. XD But oh well. At least I'll never have to change it. Unless I marry. XD

- How did you come across Just Gotta?
I was looking at Pokemon comics on SJ and hoping for a hand drawn one... And I saw Just Gotta...

- What was your first impression?
"The art isn't too good...." (followed by some talking to myself such as "shut up ye lousy artist...." Embarassed )  and "But the story is interesting" Confused

- Why have you continued to read it?
It's different.  It's not badge collecting or some Pokemon champ that is going to save the world.  AND IT ISN'T SPRITES!  Most Pokemon comics I see are sadly sprite.... (not that they are good but some are kinda... iffy...)  I know the art isn't the best but it's fun to see how an artist evolves! (not like a Pokemon does but I think you get the point)
Georgia

I forgot to mention that I thought the comic was pretty cute because I the first comic I *actually* saw was Comic number 36... ^^; But then I read the whole thing after randomly seeing that comic.

http://justgotta.myfastforum.org/sutra2199.php#2199

- What was your first impression?

The same as almost everyone it seems...
"The art isn't all that good... but let's see ow the story goes"

- Why have you continued to read it?

The story turned out to be strangely interesting after just a few comics, and it had me wanting to know what was going to happen, so I read from #1 up to the Akuma fancomic in one sitting. The art still needs improvement, 'specially for certain Pokémon, but I still find myself coming back to find out where the story is going.
Vye Brante

Ha ha, I still think it's funny how everyone has the same first impression.  And just think!  What if the story wasn't good enough to ignore the horrible art?
BeetheDragontrainer

I'd think that you'd have not nearly as many fans d:

I wouldn't say the art is horrible though, that's quite an overstatement, but it definitely still needs improvement in specific areas, mostly with specific Pokémon.
On the other hand your art as gotten better over time, so I´m sure that as you go on it´ll only get better.

But I´m getting a bit off-topic here d:
Vye Brante

Not by too much though.

It depends on the page a lot of times.  Sometimes it's okay, and other times I just hate it.  But yeah, I see improvement here and there.
Naya

How did you come across Just Gotta?

- It was a Comic Spotlight, saw charmander and had to click it~

What was your first impression?
"Wow, the art is worse then my stuff... I wanna re due these pages D:"

Why have you continued to read it?
I still dislike the art, (Sorry ^^;; ) but the story is wonderful, aside from Mewthree I've never agreed with any kind of mewthree. but its(/spyro) cute so I'm putting aside my dislike for it :3
Vye Brante

Heh, sorry the art makes you want to redraw it so bad . . .  I feel like redrawing comics I didn't write too, but when they're written poorly instead.  Not like I could claim my art is better than theirs, necessarily.

But no offense taken.  I know I'm not an artist.

Technically, Mewthree is just a black Mewtwo with the name Mewthree.  That will be explained soon(ish.)  Glad you like Spyro though!
Pretty Sammy

Very Happy Hi!

Well, I'm technically not a new reader, but I just registered for these forums and uhhh yeah.

How Did I Find It?: Just trolling on Smack Jeeves as I usually do. D: Saw the banner on the Featured Comic spot and was like "Ooo a Charmander!" Oh, and having it hand-drawn was a also a plus.  A lot of the sprite comics I see are ridiculously bad.

First Impressions: "Pokemon comic?! Gimmee!  Oh wait, girl gets sucked into Pokemon world -- SUE -- oh wait -- waaaaaiiitt...ooo.  Not so much. Very Happy" (Yes my mind goes that fast).

Why Have You Continued to Read It?: Because I really love the story and the fun little plot.  Vye's got me hooked -- I wanna know what's going to happen to Hillaree. I can't just STOP before I know. D:!!
Vye Brante

Ha ha, I really am glad the story is good enough to have people hooked.  Makes me feel like I know what I'm doing almost.
Amjam

It seems like the general consensus is "Well, I have some free time. Let's browse comics. Oh, look, a CHARMANDER! Eh, the art's not so great. Oh wow, what a cool plot! Guess I'll stick around."

That gives me an idea for a gag about the "average Just Gotta fan" XD
Vye Brante

Yup, that seems to pretty much how it works out.  Go Spyro for pulling everyone in!
ninja

I just finished reading all three. They are great well drawn and awesome story lines. My favorite is of course just gotta but that is probably just becuase it has the most. i cant wait for updates Very Happy
Vye Brante

Bleh, yeah, Just Mewtwo and Gotta Past need to be updated.  Particularly Just Mewtwo.  I had a page drawn, but now I hate it so I'm actually going to redo it.

Anyways, yay, someone that didn't think right away how the art sucked!  And now do you understand why they're running from the Aerodactyl?  Stop giving them a hard time!

(Stuff we talked about at work, don't worry about it everyone else.)
kirbyboy102

... I DO redo the pages...

And to elaborate on my post, I really don't know why I'm reading it... I mean, it's not my "type" of story.  I don't like the art too much and a lot of the commenters are immature and severely annoying.  Sometimes I don't even bother to type a whole sentance because I feel pity on you for having to read through the junk!  Which, of course, limits me to a random exclaimation about a panel.  You know which pages they are, they're the only ones that don't have a paragraph on them.

Not even spyro can save me from the horrible comments.  Now, you're probably thinking "Why not just ignore them?"  Well, I always read the comments, because I like hearing others' opinions.  Not in real life when they say theirs while I'm still talking or when they comment and yell at me when I'm only halfway through my expaination. Mad Now, I just wanna slap the annoying commenters.  Thank GOD I've only had one on my comic.  And they only commented to say "hey, I don't get your comic and they all look the same" basically.  Now, I respect opinions, but when each character has a DISTINCT different look, down to their clothing style?  Now THAT P%sses me off.  And they rated the comic a 1, too.  God, if you aren't gonna read it anyway, why bother?

Okay, back on topic.  Seriously, I'm still readin' the comic, and I love daisy, but sometimes it's just others that ruin the experience, ya know?  *coughcoughkingsamuraicoughcough*

Anyhow... *looks up at above novel*  Please do read it.  It'll be good for ya!  And sorry for ranting, it's just... I'm in a ranting mood today.  That and I have a horrible headache that isn't being helped from my mother's BF's loud videogame. ;_;
Vye Brante

I'm going to say the same thing I said to Rebirth about all the n00bs and their sprite comics: I don't see the problem.  I don't know why you'd let silly comments effect you to the point that it makes you angry or that annoyed.  They're just . . . comments.  It's not like they're trying to be offensive or stir up trouble.  They're either just saying what they think or trying to be funny.

Sure, stupidity can be annoying, but it's not like we have to dwell on it and keep us away from something we enjoy.  If they really bug you that much, then you really should just stop reading them.  There's no point in doing something that's just going to upset you.

Don't know if I can actually talk you out of it, but I dunno, it just seems pointless to be so worked up over nothing.

Ha ha sry about giving them a hard time about the Aerodactyl. but it was so fun! Twisted Evil  I really was just joking around though Laughing

Ha ha, I know.   Wink

Yeah, it's just I enjoy reading what people have to say, and when they're acting stupid it makes me a little annoyed to have to go through all of those stupid comments.  As for trying to be funny, sometimes they ARE.  It's just when they aren't thats annoying.

...Answers!

How did you come across Just Gotta?

I used SJ's search engine to look for Pokemon comics, and I'm not that fond of sprite comics.. they give me an headache, sorry.... and Just Gotta was the 1st hand drawn comic, and it was at the TOP of the list that the search turned up.

What was your first impression?

I actually was impressed by the art, and the story hooked me enough to have me sit though 6 to 8 hours of reading (at the time there was about 350 +/_ pages!) Besides, it's awesome to have a Pokemon story that isn't 100% about battles, etc. etc.

Why have you continued to read?

Because the comic is awesome, and I love the plot and I'm enjoying watching the author evolve along with Hilaree and the gang~
Lemurtail

- How did you come across Just Gotta?
Smackjeeves 8^D I don't remember how, though..

- What was your first impression?
That the artist is trying the best. I don't know if it's true, but that was my first impression xD

- Why have you continued to read it?
Because the story is interesting, and it makes me want to know what happens next :0
RaiChan

How did you come across Just Gotta:
I was searching for Pokemon comics

First Impression:
I really dont care how good the art is when it comes to a fan comic. With me it is all about the story.
My first impression of the story is that Hillaree(sorry if its spelled wrong) left such a sue impression on me. Though she did get better as the story went on.=3

Why have you continued to read it:
I really really really want to know how it ends.X3
