Newbie Mistakes (Or mistakes in general.)I saw this topic or a topic like it on the Serebii forums once a long time ago and thought it'd be fun to talk about here. Everyone makes mistakes in Pokémon at one point. What mistakes have you made?
This may not seem major, but when I first started playing, I had no idea what some of the items were for. Like Ethers, Elixirs, and stat raising stuff like Protiens and PP Up's. Since I didn't know what they were for, what did I do with them? Sold them of course!
Heh, yeah. Wasted items. I don't know at what point I figured out what they were for, but I sure didn't sell them after that!
I've made other newbie mistakes, but I'll let you guys add to the discussion a little. I've been dominating the forum!!

Okay, I have a very silly couple of mistakes on my first ever version, Gold. (In fact, they're still on my cartridge so I could show you a screen of the really sad one.)
Well, first of all, I made the typical mistake of not knowing to save before a legendary battle. Ho-oh = Pwned.
But my really funny one is... well, you know how your rival (Not yet your rival) comes up to you in the beginning, and says "I'm ???. I'm going to be the super strongest pwnsome Pokemon master and I'm going to beat you up!" cue battle... Well, that's basically how it went. Anyway, when the police officer asked me what his name was.... I wrote ???. XDDD Because I assumed that /was/ his name, and he was telling me. And I was through Ecruteak before my friend started talking about naming her rival ridiculous things, and I was like... "oh."

HehThat's a good one!
I almost made one mistake. Before I was able to buy Blue version, I got a book about all the Pokémon to read up on them. I didn't realize that it was leaning more on the anime part than the game part. It was talking about how Bulbasaur, due to its shape, was hard to capture. I was thinking that maybe I should start with Bulbasaur because it would be hard to catch one later . . . Then one of my more experienced friends explained that you don't get to catch the starters. I then went with Charmander 'cause it was the one I wanted.
Near miss there.
But there was an actual mistake made later. After I beat Blaine, I taught Spyro Fire Blast. The first battle I got into, I used it to see what it could do. It missed. Then when it did hit, it didn't do much because I was fighting a Water Pokémon. I was like, "This move sucks!" So the first oppurtunity I had, I taught him something else, wasting a perfectly good TM.
I learned my lesson later when Fire Blast was used against me . . .

my mistake is mainly not saving before a big important battle or important part.
|
Vye Brante
|
YupThat's always a problem. That's why I swear by strategy guides. Then I know when something big is coming up and to save my game.
One mistake I made wasn't a huge deal, but looking back on it now I just wonder how I was so stupid. You know how when you go to Lavender Town and go into Pokémon Tower and fight all those Gastly? And you know how Gastly aren't affected by Normal Type attacks? Well, I didn't know that it was the types that caused that. I saw how Spyro's Ember attack worked and assumed it was the only one that would. So the whole tower I only used Spyro, never attempting to try other attacks from the rest of my team. So Spyro got way ahead of everyone else. I'm pretty sure my other Pokémon had attacks that would have worked . . . I just didn't know that they would because I didn't try.
Again, not a huge deal, but pretty stupid . . .

Hehe I used to play Blue version all day then I'd waste the battery because I didn't know how to save and turn it off so I'd wait for my brother. xD

Ha ha!That's another good one!
This isn't game oriented, but it was another mistake I made early on. I was collecting Pokémon cards and one of the first ones I got was a rare Pidgeot. I didn't have a Pidgey or a Pidgeotto so I thought I couldn't use it. I mean, that's true in a battle sense but not just with collecting them. Since I didn't think I could use it, I gave it away. For nothing in return. A rare card. Ugh . . . Did I ever really know so little about Pokémon?

well. I started playing pokemon 1st gen. but the first video game was like Silver version for me. My cousin was great at the game. He gave me like 10 super strong pokemon. Then like a month later, some other cousin's who have pokemon wanted to battle and i was training weak pokemon at the time and didn't know how to switch pokemon, i accidently released a Raikou. didn't realize it until the next day.
I rented a Crystal game when it released and wanted a totodile. I traded a lugia for the totadile and released the lugia in the crystal game.
I made super bogus mistakes. It really stinks.
|

I also bought the Magikarp from the salesperson.
And I was convinced that the Clefairy dance would give you a free Celebi if you watched it every week for a year (don't know how my cousin talked me into that one.)

Hee hee, these are fun. I know I've made other mistakes, but can't think of any right now.
I made a shiny Poochenya faint. That sucked.

Vye Brante
|
Oh, oh! I thought of another mistake!
On my first game and my first time through Cinnabar Island, I went to the mansion and encountered a Growlithe. I used Spyro against it. It used Roar. This was the first time I had seen Roar used outside of a trainer battle. Back then, it didn't switch the Pokemon, it made them run away. So it said that Spyro was scared away. I was like, "What? Where did he go?!" I ran around looking for him thinking that he had actually ran off and I had to find him. But then I was attacked again and used Spyro. I figured out he was just put back in his ball . . .
So yeah. There's that.
|
Georgia
|
That's not major, but that's pretty funny!
|
Vye Brante
|
Heh, yeah. Nothing bad happened but it gives me a good chuckle when I think about it. I was seriously saying, "No! Spyro! Come back!" Little did I know he didn't actually go anywhere . . .

Oh yeah! I once made Ho-oh die. and then saved. XD At least my blissey got a few levels higher. She was lvl 43 or something after I killed Ho-oh.

Well, Pokémon Yellow was my first video game ever. So when I started it and didn't know English that well (meh, I was like, five-six years old and I'm Dutch, sooooo....) so I didn't even know what the A button was for. When I got the hang of it, I wondered what the release option did. I lost my dear Pikachu that day

I did the same thing. Also, my brother released his first Pokemon once in FireRed (a lvl 70 Charizard) and I g helped him get it back. I was all "Don't worry, just turn the game off and on" and he did and all was good.
Also, My friend Matt used to like Pokemon and he had all the old games (Yellow, Crystal, etc) that he wanted to get rid of, and I didn't have any Pokemon games, so one day at recess we were standing on a play structure and Matt was auctioning his old games and this guy named Taylor told Matt that he would give him $100 for Yellow version, right? And I was in third grade, and I wanted Yellow badly! So I started to cry and made this long speech about how Im better friends with Matt and how just because I don't have $100 doesn't mean I shouldn't get the game, so Matt felt bad and sold it to me for $10. Hah, suckers. That is how I got my first Pokemon game. Then Matt gave me Crystal for $5!
But after I got bored with Yellow, I gave it away.
And once I was playing yellow and I had my squirtle in the daycare. I had left him there for a while and when I came back he was at level 17, so I thought he couldn't evolve anymore because he was disabled or something.

My WORST mistake EVER was using my Masterball on a wild pokemon.
The wild pokemon was a DIGLETT. yes, a DIGLETT!!!! A MASTERBALL ON A DIGLETT! It was my first game, Blue.
|
Oranges_and_Pears
|
I used my master ball on Zapdos in Leafgreen because I was stupid and didn't save before battling it.
|
Spekkal_X
|
I still regret using my masterball on it too.
When I met my first shiny pokemon, spheal, I dodnt know what shiny was, I had a go at it just incase and later on I saw it was rare. I was so close to running away.
|
Vye Brante
|
I went a long time without knowing what a shiny was either. It took me a while to realize the Smoochum I hatched was a shiny.
I probably killed/ran away from a shiny at some point without knowing what it was. Not sure though.
|
Spekkal_X
|
Same here, but I just hope I didnt. I would HATE meeting a shiny in battle tower.
|
Vye Brante
|
Why? 'Cause it's someone else's?
|
Spekkal_X
|
I mean on the battle frontier when you meet it wild but you cant catch it

Ling
|
Not per se a mistake, but my first time through Mt. Moon in Yellow, I got hammered pretty hard and was just about to make it out when I got ambushed by Team Rocket at the exit. They either knocked out or poisoned everything on my Team, but I made it out.
...and just as I was about to enter Cerulean City, my last Pokémon fainted from poison and I got teleported back to the Mt. Moon Center. Being ten, I had a fit.
|
Spekkal_X
|
That would be a NIGHTMARE.
Also on my fierst few games it took me a while to figure out types
|
Vye Brante
|
Dang, Ling, that would have been horrible!
|
Georgia
|
For a while I didn't know what a Steel type was. xD

Oranges_and_Pears

My first time playing yellow, the only Pokemon I ever battled with was Pikachu, so he ended up at level 80 before I even beat the Elite four.
|
Tyto
|
On my Crystal game, I used my Masterball on a Kangaskhan. xD
Also, it took me a while to figure out the various healing items. At one point, one of I my Pok'emon was down into the red in HP, and I kept trying to use a Full Heal. I was grumbling and yelling at the screen, demanding to know why the item "can't be used right now."
I'm pretty sure I fainted Ho-oh and the entire legendary trio on Crystal the first time around, too.
|
Vye Brante
|
Heh, I think it took me a while to figure out Full Heal too.
|
Georgia
|
Same here. Why, oh WHY did they call it that? >_<
For a while I thought if you caught a pokemon with a Dusk Ball, your pokemon will turn to a dark pokemon from XD...Boy, was I wrong. ^^;
|
kirbyboy102
|
I named all of my pokemon, trainer, and enemy bad names and my mother got mad. xD "HONEY, WHAT IS THIS!?" I remember it clearly.
I remember that I murdered Mewtwo because my Chansey was level 100... (sorry Vye, Mewtwo!) and then when I realized it, I had saved and I had to restart the whole game!! (But I traded my chansey to another game and back to the new game, so I beat the gym leaders easy.)
|
Oranges_and_Pears

I used to be afraid of battling ledgendaries DX
And I also thought that after a few years your Pokemon would actually die, like a Tamagotchi.
|
Vye Brante

Heh, that would be heartbreaking! It's also kinda true though. The old versions like Blue and Gold and suck stop working so everything gets deleted. Darn it!

Okay, so a long time ago I first got into pokemon. Card game only... My friend told me all about it. UI move, basicly forget pokemon. So I'm watching ths awsome new channel I found. Pokemon comes on, and I'm like I remember this! blahblahblah... I get pokemon mystery dungeon, and I'm just figuring it out, and I play for hours on end. I got to fight team meanies. I couldn't figure out how to stop my team from useing useless attacks! I'm like... OKAY YOU'VE USED RAGE FIVAE TIMES IN A ROW!!!! GENGAR IS KILLING ME!!! plus, I still stink at type combos... Also, When I played Pokemon Crater (WHICH THEY F************ KILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I Found an Evee right? I love Eevee, and my mission was to catch a bunch of them so I could get every evolution, I didn't want to let it get away so I bring out my lv 100 Mightyena Used one attack... Eevee fainted. It stunk. But I did beat Ash like 20 times...

Heh, yeah things are a lot easier if you have the type relationships down.
Welcome to the forum, by the way! (I've replied to other posts but didn't welcome you there!)

Biggest mistake ever, Used my masterball in blue... or was it yellow... anyway, I used a masterball to catch a jigglypuff.
|
Vye Brante
|
Hee hee, Jigglypuff.
I think in the beginning, I didn't realize that the Master Ball could be used to catch whatever. I thought it was in the game just for Mewtwo and didn't think about using it on anybody else. And I think I didn't realize that Mewtwo could be caught with a different ball if you wanted and tried hard enough.
So when I heard about using the Master Ball on someone else, or about someone catching Mewtwo in an Ultra Ball or whatever, I was like, " . . . What?"
|
kirbyboy102
|
I had a team of 6 jigglypuffs. And I never got to the 5th gym leader because they were too weak! xD
Serious. I had each one with speciic TM attacks.
|
Vye Brante

Heh, yeah, I don't think I could get very far with a whole team of Jigglypuff's . . .
|
kirbyboy102

I got pretty far with the team of chanseys and the team of clefairies though...
|
Vye Brante

That's at least a little more balanced.

too bad they don't have a cute purple pokemon. ;__; or I'd have a team of them.
Chansey has hardboiled, so they pay for themselves.
|
Georgia
|
A lot of shinys are purple. The thing is, though, they're aren't many cute purple pokemon. Well, there's always Mudkip... <3
I'm trying to think of a mistake I made... Involving Tauros...Darn it, I can't remember! >.<

I traded a shiny Geodude with a good nature for a level 80 Quagsire I needed for breeding...
And then remembered that I already HAD a male Quagsire around that level on my Emerald game >.<
|
Vye Brante
|
Aw man! A pointless trade, huh? Nuts . . .
And what do you mean there are no cute purple Pokemon! Who do you think you're talking to here? Mewtwo, duh!!!
. . . That or Drifloon. FREAKIN' ADORABLE.

Dangit! I forgot about Driffy! <3 He's so cute.

I don't always have the patience to go it the long way with legendaries if I have cheat codes available. But where I go through the game once without them, I do have to catch them without Master Balls if I want them. The runners are a pain to track down . . . but I love Mesprit so I forgive it.

The Ultimate MistakeAs you probably know, at a certain point in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire you get the Premium Ball (basically a white pokeball). I thought it was the equivalent to the Master Ball, and tried using it on Groudon. Epic Fail? Definitely...
But not as epic as a mistake a friend made. He used his Master Ball on a Lvl 33 Steelix, thinking it was an ultra ball.

My sad mistake was (when I was younger):
I was playing through Yellow and I had battled every trainer I could find and up to the 4th or 5th gym leader (not sure).
I did not have Surf and couldn't find it.
I had used Pikachu so many times, he was the same level as Ash's is in Mt.Silver, which is 81 (my character in Yellow was also Ash).
So anyway, on Yellow, I couldn't find Surf and (this was all before the stragey guide for Yellow came out) so I thought that I could not get any farther in the game...
I Deleted my Yellow save because I thought that was as far as I could get...
My Pikachu and his team still live on in my Pokemon Stadium 2 game (too bad I can't transfer them back or to a new game, as they are just images of my old team).
I cried for like forever since I found out what deleting the save actually did (I was like 8 or so and had been playing Yellow since it came out, and never tried deleting before).
I still do cry (especially when in bed and I think about Pokemon) sometimes when I go on Pokemon Stadium 2 and battle my Pikachu and my team with my then-new Typhlosion (and defeat my old team over and over on the Hard CPU).

I don't know if I've said this before or not, but it took me forever to figure out that Froslass was part Ghost. I kept attacking it with Close Combat and then I wouldn't pay attention for whatever reason, and then would look back and wonder why it wasn't dead yet.
I caught on eventually . . .

I'm not sure if this is a newbie/noobie mistake, but I didn't actually bother with the whole "Mean Look" strategy for Cresselia and Mespirit. You know what I did? I used their rules against them; by moving to another route, you make them move. Wind-something Valley (the one with the windfarm, right of Floaroma Town) and the co-joining route were my most common haunts, but I distinctly remember using the Battle Park place too. Anyway, I made Mespirit faint (but that was somewhat okay because of the GTS) and by the GTS I had obtained a Cresselia anyway. I used repeat balls on it and wondered why it kept getting free. It wasn't until a whole month (and about $50,000 wasted on repels) that I realised that the repeat ball does nothing to legendaries. Oh.
But it gets better. I'd devote entire days, maybe weeks, to finding and catching the runners, all in vain. So, one morning I wake up, grab my DS, play Pearl, meet Cresselia entirely by chance and thought "The hell with it, I'll use an Ultra Ball". It worked. "... what the hell?!"

Hmm... I'm sure there's another one somewhere... Oh! Maybe it was trading my ONLY female Cacnea for an egg that held a Teddiursa! I think someone may know about that... it's a mistake because I need a cacturne for My Pokémon Ranch. Facepalm!

i was lucky, i have an older sister who owns yellow and when i was 6 or 7 i was allowed to play my OWN FILE we do have stadium though. so i had someone to help me not make any mistakes.
i accidently fainted moltres and the last time i saved was gyms back (notice the plural) from then on i always save before something important. (gyms, bosses, and legies mostly)
when my yellow pikachu was able to learn thunder i got rid of thunderbolt.
trying to think of more.

I blew my Ruby Master Ball on a Relicanth because I was so sick-and-tired of trying to catch one to unlock the Regis. I made up for it later with some epic captures (I caught a Registeel and a Zapdos in Great Balls!)
First time I played I was struck with the keystone effect, where one POKE is way overpowered and the rest are weak, so I'm pretty much screwed if my keystone faints. Got over that pretty fast.
My first exposure to Gold was the original Japanese version (Obtained the day it came out in Japan, and I'm American!) Naturally, being unable to read Japanese back then, I didn't know about getting the egg to continue. I tried passing through the Alph ruins a few times and tried so many different ways that all of my pokemon (including an Unown) reached level 15 (In the alph ruins...) before I... restarted the game out of boredom and finally got a guide...
In my current Platinum game, I don't have any electric pokemon... against all the Gyarados... Curse me and my choice to never have the same team twice...
I love pokemon that are hard to raise and give a challenge to the player, Some of the pokemon I've wasted time raising include: That Magikarp from the Magikarp salesman, Venonat, Hoppip, Onix, Zubat at a REALLY early level, Tentacool (also REALLY early), Slugma, Slakoth, and (in my most infamous move) DUNSPARCE!!

I remember in Pokemon Gold when I ran into a Shiny Zubat in Rock Tunnel
I tried to weaken it with a level 61 Feraligatr -_-
And when I knocked it out, I spent the rest of the day looking for it.
And once, I mis-read the Pokemon Colleseum (sp) guide and I thought it said you had to catch all 48 Pokemon until you can purified them. My own mom proved me wrong when she showed me a Feraligatr (I seem to have a thing for Feraligatrs...)
Ahhhh, memories...

I just caught Mesprit in Platinum using my Gengar, Zhost. He did pretty well despite being a few levels below. All he needed to do was Mean Look and Hypnosis though. I already had Mesprit weakened.
Mesprit sure didn't want to get caught though! I used a ton of Poke Balls!
You know what I've come to realize while watching playthrough videos on YouTube? Not everyone plays through the game with a team of six. Or at least they only have like 3 or 4 through most of the game, filling it up as they go. I always try to get a full team as soon as I can. I don't know why . . . I could really expand my team options if I didn't rush into filling a team. But the longest I've gone without six is maybe three badges. Maybe. It's probably more like two.
That being said, my HeartGold team is already decided on and I'll probably have everyone together before the first gym. *cough*

The first game I ever had was Pokemon Yellow.
It was a blast. I knew what a Masterball would do, had a superpowered Pikachu, reached the Elite Four several times on different playthroughs...
But for the first 6 months, I had no idea what the switch option did. For the last month I thought it might've brought them out instead of Pikachu. Imagine my embarassment when I discovered otherwise...
