OC Character design sketch: Amber

This is a character I've developed for a comic idea I may or may not pursue. Though she's not the main main character, she is the first character we meet.

Her name is Amber (I haven't decided on a last name) and she's a 16-year-old Ace Trainer. As far as journeys go, she's pretty much done; eight badges, got 2nd place in a league tourney, and she starts the series headed to a battle-frontier-ish resort (Though it's got a bit more gambling that usual, like people placing bets on who will win the tournaments, etc.)

Her personality is a little odd. Clearly a tomboy by personality, Amber has a short temper and a stubborn streak a mile wide. She is also quite confident and has no sense of vulnerability. She's still fairly girly, though, and enjoys girly things (She grows ecstatic upon learning of the four-star restaurants and spas at the Pokemon Island of Paradise).

Her pokemon include Beautifly, Furret, Exploud, Charizard, and Gyarados. Her Furret and Beautifly are more there for their cuteness factor, while the others are power pokemon. Each of those three are considered to be a handful for a trainer, so the fact that she can handle all three is a testament to her abilites as a trainer (Or just her sheer orneryness).

Here she is!:

I've always sucked at designing cute outfits, but I did my best on this one.

Amber has red hair tied into pigtails. She keeps a pair of pink sunglassed on her head when they aren't over her eyes. Her shirt is dark red and quite form-fitting but it's made of a soft, jersey-knit material that feels great on the skin so it's not uncomfortable.

Most female Pokemon Trainer characters have a pokeball motif somewhere on their outfit; many put it on their hat but I went for a more daring approach by putting it on the flank of her mini-skirt. Amber is a person who is proud of her body, so she loves the daring approach. A pair of black, thigh-high stockings fill in the empty space on the legs and is finished off by some very comfortable walking shoes. A couple of fingerless gloves round out the outfit.

I admit I put more effort into this outfit that usual. What you guys think?

I like it!

Oh, and welcome to the forum!  (Heh, just welcoming you everywhere now, huh?)

Switching gears back here for a second, she sounds like an interesting character.  I like stubborn characters a lot and I know it can be hard to show that part of them.  (Sorta, I think, anyway.)  I like her hair and her outfit too.  Your style shines through nicely.  I've read your comic before, see.  The . . . ah man, it's been a while since I've checked it though . . . uh . . . Just Kiss Me?  That don't sound right.  One second . . .

*Checks*

For Your Eyes Only!  Right!  Sheesh.  Really has been a while since I checked it, apparently.  Blame Neko's drawing for you for confusing me.

. . . Anyway . . .

Yeah, in full support of a new comic if you should decide to start it!  And if this side character is so cool, can't wait to see the main character!  (Should you show us, I suppose.  Heh.  Sorry if I make no sense.)
Kohdok

Ah, so you've read my comic! I guess you found it through Neko. You like it?

As for the MAIN main character, I'm actually tempted to lend him to you if you want. I have a story hook for him to have a temporary appearance.
Ghost

Oh wow...
This makes me so envious xD I wish I could design neat outfits like that o.o and the kneees, I don't know why, I am just in live with them ;__;

I like the sound of Amber.
Be sure to let us know if you do end up making a comic ;P
That or I'll just keep an eye out, either way xD

And, as Vye said, welcome to the forums. ^^
Kohdok

Thanks!

Well, I used the design of the previous pokemon heroines as a basis for the kinds of outfits you get. The thigh-highs were my own inspiration, but the rest is pretty similar to other designs:

The big things that help an outfit scream "Pokemon Trainer" are the Pokeball motif and wearing something on their heads. Comfy shoes and a functional outfit help with the look, too.

Yep, I found it through Neko.  And yes, I do like it!  I just haven't checked it in a while.  I check comics that are not on Smack Jeeves every once in a while so I can read several pages at once, although I sometimes tend to forget to keep checking at some point.

. . . As the case was here.

I was actually thinking about it the other day though and then saw you on PokeRandom and I was like, "Holy crap!"  It was kinda funny in a hard to explain kind of way . . .

Hm . . . technically character submissions aren't open right now . . . And it kind of depends on what you mean by that as the characters people submit just more or less fill up holes.  They have to fit the story, not have the story adjusted to them.

That aside though, you have me curious and one of the things I like about you and your stories are the characters you set up.  They actually have like a depth to them which you can't always find in some works.

So to heck with it!  If you want to, PM me either here or on Smack Jeeves with the details you'd like to share and we'll see how he'll fit.  What the non-forum members don't know won't hurt me!

Some of the people that have submitted characters have fallen off the face of the earth anyway, making it less fun to use them unless they come back . . . or something.  Might need some holes refilled here soon.  There's a character set to appear right after the Viridian Arc, for example, who I have even drawn and sent off to the creator and have heard nothing back!  So . . . yeah.
Kohdok

Are you looking for an Ace trainer or someone with a cute or somewhat-unusual-like-spyro poke-companion? Because this guy fills all those roles.
Vye Brante

To fill this slot after the Viridian Arc, you mean?  Mm . . . She was just a regular trainer I think.

I can take either though.  It might just be a while before he appeared.
Kohdok

I could do a new trainer for you (design and everything). What kind of character would work best? Male/female, quirky/serious, weak/strong. Since it seems that other people give you character ideas, what say I tailor one for you?
Vye Brante

Mm, doesn't really matter . . .

Here's how it works: The submitter gives me a trainer with a name, basics of design, Pokemon on the team, and a brief history of personality and where they came from and all that.  I figure out what storyline they best fit in, and put them there.  At some point, usually when the storyline gets closer but I have been known to work ahead of time to, I draw what they'd look like in my style and whatnot and then send it off to the submitter to be approved.

It used to be that I'd also write up the chapter ahead of time and send it off the submitter so they'd know what their character would do and stuff, but I don't do it anymore.  Just more work for me.

So yeah.  I don't really need you to come up with someone new for me just to fill this slot.  There are other trainers I could use instead.  (I think I might know which one I'll probably use, actually.)  If you already had a character in mind that I could use for something else, I'd still take it.  It just, like I said, might be a while before they appear.
Kohdok

Alrighty, you need a trainer design and I've got one!

Professor Bonsai: Professor Bonsai, like Professor Birch, is a field-specialist pokemon scientist who specializes in studying pokemon attacks. His current projects involve studying the signature attacks of several legendary pokemon, and so he follows many of them and tries to copy their attacks with his Smeargle's "Sketch" attack. By using and observing these copied attacks, he can take important data on the attacks without needing the actual legendary pokemon always being there.

He's a bit on the eccentric side and has been subjected to some of the most powerful pokemon attacks in the world. He's energetic and sometimes a little childish, as well as jealous of other Professor's popularity despite his ground-breaking work.

His lovely assistant, a pink-painting Smeargle, has used its "Sketch" abilities to copy many legendary attacks, including Mist Ball, Seed Flare and Aeroblast (Meaning she has met a Latias, a Shaymin, and a Lugia respectively). While Smeargle does know some epic attacks, it is still a Smeargle and the copied techniques are still no match for the original.

He'll probably be encountered if Hilaree encounters a legendary pokemon with a signature attack or learns that she's met Deoxys (Whose Psycho Boost is also a signature attack).

Appearance: Ya know Melvin(Umino) from Sailor Moon? Like that, only older and in a lab coat.
Vye Brante

Hm, sounds interesting!  I'll PM you when I get an idea of when he might appear.  (Gotta do it through PM to avoid spoilers, 'ya see.)
Kohdok

Here's my sketch of them! Not bad, seeing as it's the first time I've drawn Smeargle. I'd say Bonsai wears a blue turtleneck under his labcoat and probably has black or brown shoes. That's a band-aid on his left cheek (Probably from the most recent legendary attack he "experienced").

His current research might put him in touch with Prof Nevans.

Heh. I see the line "At least I'm named after a tree" quip after one of your trio makes fun of him. Granted, the tree is only about a foot high (And absolutely diminutive compared to the other trees (Oak, Elm, Rowan, Birch, etc)), but it's still a tree!

Vye Brante

Ha ha, the tree thing came to my mind too.  I thought about the connection to Pr. Nevans possibility too.
